Vistas & Landscapes - Page 1 of 3

From the air, the world below is sprinkled with wonderful sights.

October 2, 2003:  An over-the-shoulder view toward Three Rivers, MI out the back of Cessna 27U.

October 2, 2003:  A magnificent cloudscape observed as Cessna 27U banks to the left.

October 12, 2003:  A "Dave's-eye view" out the front of Decathlon 68W.

October 12, 2003:  These gorgeous blueberry fields greet aviators departing South Haven's runway 22 in the fall.

May 16, 2004:  This photo was taken looking south from 5000 feet over Northport, MI.  The large body of water on the left is Grand Traverse Bay.  To the right of the frame is Lake Leelanau.  I have no idea what they're growing down there, but I thought it all made for an eye-catching pattern.

August 10, 2004:  "Hoosier Highway"  En route to Bloomington Indiana, Kent and I left the denser clouds of southwest Michigan behind.  Kent took this photo of an unidentified Indiana highway running west across a landscape decorated by a few clouds.

September 18, 2004:  An early morning flight under a thin overcast layer revealed this quilt-like vista southwest of Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Fall is an amazing time in farm country. For most of the year, fields tend to be the same color when viewed from above: white in winter, brown in spring, green during the summer. But the fall harvest brings out an amazing variety of color across the landscape. I suspect that the overhead cloud layer and low angle of the morning sun may have contributed a quality of light that accentuated the color differences more than usual.

June 23, 2005:  Seen from 5500' over a Florida swamp.

July 30, 2006:  Though Rochester, NY is reasonably flat, a short flight southeast into the Finger Lakes region reveals some significant terrain.

August 12, 2006:  This intriguing view was captured from 6500' just south of Dansville, NY.  Trees cover the gentle slopes of a plateau, the top of which exhibits odd contours where local farmers have claimed the rolling terrain for their own purposes.

August 12, 2006:  On the way home to Le Roy. NY after a trip to the Cherry Ridge airport (Honesdale, PA), we overflew the Genesee River (foreground) at 6500'.  The fields west of the river gorge are filled with local examples of strip farming.  The lake is Silver Lake, located just south of the Perry-Warsaw Airport.

December 12, 2006:  Southbound to Wellsboro, PA (N38).  As I neared the New York - Pennsylvania state line at 5500', a haze layer developed below, limiting visibilities to about 10 - 15 miles.  Under the haze layer, a series of ridges appeared about 2400' high (according to the sectional chart, at least).  I momentarily thought of my Piper Warrior as a an oceangoing ship skimming the surface of the sea, with a treacherous reef lurking just below the surface.  The photo doesn't do it justice - it was beautiful.
