Flight Tales

"Hangar flying" is a wonderful thing, a source of education and entertainment.  Below are some of my tales from the logbook.  I have a habit of highlighting my aeronautical gaffes, but those make for better stories.

"Mishaps at Muskegon"
July 20, 2002

My take on the ubiquitous first solo story. Rainbows! Distant cityscapes!  And...um ... where did the runway go? Not one of my finest moments as a student on a solo cross country.  A prime example of how NOT to work with air traffic control.

"Like Wearing an Elephant as a Hat"
June 22, 2003

Ever wonder what a private pilot check ride is like? Pulling g's in a T-28 Trojan.  I was just along for the ride on this one, but it was quite a ride.

"Flight in a 1929 Travel Air Biplane"

"From Renter to Owner"
Winter / Spring 2004

Cruising the Pacific coastline in a vintage biplane on a calm day is about as peaceful as it gets.  At least, until you find yourself on a collision course with a Cherokee. If you thought buying a used car was a pain, buying a used airplane takes caveat emptor to a whole new level.

"All Shook Up"
September 1, 2004

"An Aerial Road Trip"
June 2005

Equipment failures are an unfortunate fact of life for new owners of used airplanes. My wife and I flew a VFR cross country flight from South Haven, MI to Ft Myers, FL and back.  The journey completed my wife's evolution from nervous passenger to enthusiastic co-pilot.

"Making an Impression"
November 26, 2005

"The Second Breather"
April 2006

Moving to a new state can be tough.  All I wanted to do was get the airplane to its new home safely and make a good impression on my new airport manager. I had engine problems on a multi-state cross country flight and my decision making was met with mixed feedback from my aviator friends.  What would you have done?

"Boldt Castle"
October 7, 2006

"Turkey Day Homecoming"
November 23 - 24, 2006

Pure fluff - a day trip to the Thousand Islands. My first VFR over flight of Canada.  It was very nearly a perfect trip and contained more firsts than you might expect from a private pilot with nearly 500 hours in the logbook.

"The Flying Bear"
August 2007

Taking a two month old infant on a cross country flight posed some unique challenges.  The flying part was easy - it was the mundane stuff that was tricky.
