Going Off-Campus: Emergency Medicine and Technology in International Disaster Response

This presentation touches on the entire process of international medical deployment, from becoming certified with the World Health Organization, to responding to the mission at a moment's notice, to demobilizing in a way that supports the local population. It will also discuss the key differences in providing care at home to providing it abroad, including improvisation with equipment, dealing with extremely vulnerable populations in foreign languages, and making difficult choices about not providing care to the same standard you're trained to. Other topics include: working with other NGOs/governments, integrating with local medical systems, and the personal toll that these deployments can take.
