Rowan Students On Call

Rowan News

More than 20 students at Rowan University may make the difference in the lives of their peers, professors and others on campus, and that is more than a philosophical statement. These young adults are members of the student volunteer emergency squad.

The squad was started in 1978 by then University President Dr. Mark Chamberlain in response to concerns from a small group of students about ambulance response time.

Today, there are 23 members on the squad, including 16 qualified as Emergency Medical Technicians. The others, some of whom are attending the EMT course in the evenings and weekends, help drive and perform other tasks not requiring EMT skills. Many members of the squad also serve on their hometown ambulances or work for private companies. In addition, several current and past members serve with Glassboro's Emergency Medical Service. The squad also has affiliate members from the Rowan Public Safety Department, EMTs who also are members of their hometown squads.

The original squad started with donated surplus equipment, including an ambulance, from other organizations. In 1986 and 1998, the Student Government Association voted to purchase a new ambulance. The 1998 truck is dedicated to Dr. Chamberlain.

Richard Wadleigh, associate director of Public Safety, is the squad's advisor. Dr. Robert Fleming, College of Business, assists him.
