The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Office of Emergency Medical Services, has awarded Rowan University's student volunteer Emergency Medical Services squad an approximately $3,500 grant for the purchase of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) with two AED training units.

The defibrillator helps correct electrical malfunction during certain types of heart attacks by shocking the heart and helping it start beating again.

Richard Wadleigh, the squad's advisor and chief of Emergency Medical Services at Rowan, said, 'The grant will enable the squad to upgrade from the AED it currently has and allow the squad to teach the use of an AED to the public, including students and employees.' People can learn to use this medical instrument with minimum training, he noted.

The grant program was open to all the volunteer first aid, rescue, ambulance or emergency medical service squads in the state.
