To the rescue

9:42 a.m., Aug. 30, 2013--During Move-In weekend on the University of Delaware's Laird Campus, quick action by UD Police, the UD Emergency Care Unit and the Aetna Rescue Team saved a man's life.

Around 4:20 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 25, a UD Police officer responded to a cry for help at the Laird Campus bridge. The officer found a man who is a parent lying unresponsive on the ground with a pool of blood around his head.

Medical assistance was called for immediately, while the officer checked for a pulse and breathing. Finding no signs of life, he began administering CPR. Additional officers arrived with an automated external defibrillator and used it to try to revive the man.

Using CPR and the defibrillator, the officers were able to revive the man. Aetna Emergency Management Services and Rescue crews arrived on the scene and transported the victim to Christiana Hospital, where he is currently recovering.

Smith, Master Police Officer Joelle Forester and Master Police Officer Raymond Lotter, as well as Lauren Carberry of the UD Emergency Care Unit," said UD Police Chief Pat Ogden. "I am also thankful for our excellent partnership with Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder and its EMS and rescue teams."
