UFPD partnership with Gator Emergency Medical Response Unit (GEMRU)

The University of Florida Division of Public Safety is proud to announce our partnership with the University of Florida Gator Emergency Medical Response Unit (GEMRU). This partnership was created in support of the educational responsibility of the University and the UF Public Safety mission in providing the highest level of community service in the protection of life and property through innovative services.

In 2015, the GEMRU was created to establish the University of Florida's first 24/7 On-Campus Emergency Medical Response System. The GEMRU will provide first response medical services to individuals on the University of Florida campus in addition to UFPD & fire rescue response. The GEMRU is a student-operated, volunteer, not for profit, non-transport, emergency medical responder service that exists to provide both emergency and non-emergency medical care to University of Florida students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The GEMRU currently has 41 members, 13 of which are EMT/Paramedic certified. The GEMRU is overseen by Medical Director, Dr. Christine Van Dillen, MD., the UF Department of Emergency Medicine, and Assistant Vice-President of Public and Environmental Safety, Chief Linda J. Stump-Kurnick. Dr. Van Dillen states “the GEMRU is a great addition to emergency medical resources and the program provides a great amount of motivation and experience to the personnel involved. I am excited to be a part of it all.”

The GEMRU will be staffed at numerous special events throughout the year which would ordinarily not have emergency medical staff on site. The first on campus event they will be working is on January 24, 2016.
