Followership: Leadership in Disguise
Followership is an integral part of Crew Resource Management (CRM). We are recognizing that there is science and experience to promote good followership. This is an active, dynamic role, not a passive one. This theory has been around for many years, but has been slow to catch on in EMS. We will explore the followership concept as part of CRM and validate its usefulness in EMS especially focusing on the goals of the team, not the leader. Additionally, we will give examples of appropriate communication and responsibilities of both the leader and follower to work towards a common goal.
